TOMS RIVER, NJ While families may be looking forward to 4th of July barbecues, gatherings and fireworks, Independence Day can also be a time of stress and discomfort for some Toms River veterans.
Fireworks are usually the primary cause of this stress, especially for veterans who suffer from PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
PTSD affects about 7 to 8 percent of the general U.S. population, a number that reflects only a small portion of those who have gone through a traumatic experience, according to University of Michigan Health. For combat veterans and first responders, that number grows to 30 percent. ....

Latina Jazmín Ávalos crowned Miss California

The evening after the Miss California’s Outstanding Teen title went to a Latina – Canyon Hills’ Maya Álvarez-Coyne – Miss Los Ángeles County Jazmín Ávalos became the third Latina to win the Miss California crown in the pageant that dates back to 1924.
In her fourth effort to win the crown (she competed twice in the teen pageant), the 24-year-old Ávalos accepted the sash and crown from Miss California 2019-20 Eileen Kim on June 25 and got herself a ticket to the Miss America Pageant scheduled in December in Connecticut.
Miss Calaveras County Katherine Sharp finished fifth and also won the preliminary Red Carpet (which combines evening wear with state presence) and won a $2,500 scholarship in the 94-year-old competition. ....
